Matthew Ricketts and Brett Polegato

After a long hiatus, we are back to discuss Canadian art song!

In this episode of Conversations with Canadian Art Song Project, tenor Lawrence Wiliford and pianist Steven Philcox sit down with award-winning composer Matthew Ricketts and internationally acclaimed baritone Brett Polegato to discuss the creation of Songs for Judith. Commissioned by CASP, this deeply moving song cycle honours Judith Dalgleish, a beloved supporter of the arts in Canada.

Ricketts and Polegato dive into their collaboration, sharing insights on how the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay was chosen to reflect Judith’s vibrant personality and legacy. Ricketts explains his approach to composing for piano, treating the instrument as an orchestra, and the lyrical nuances he brings to his vocal writing. Polegato offers heartfelt reflections on giving voice to this cycle and exploring its emotional impact. Songs for Judith receives its premiere performance in Calgary, Alberta on October 26th, 2024.

This episode celebrates the power of art song to keep memories alive, while exploring the timeless connection between poetry, music, and personal legacy.
